How to clean and care for an electric diffuser
Article · · 7 min read
With regular use and changes of fragrance, knowing how to clean an electric diffuser helps you care for the device and keep each scent clear and balanced.
Cleaning methods differ between diffusers. Some devices use water, while others diffuse fragrance directly using cold air. Start by understanding how your device works and following the manufacturer's instructions, rather than applying one cleaning method to every type.
This guide covers diffuser care, including the cleaning steps for Celestial's Vessel 01 and what to avoid during use.
Why does an electric diffuser need cleaning?
Fragrance passes through small parts inside a diffuser. With use, some residue may remain around the nozzle or the parts that hold the fragrance.
Cleaning also matters when changing scents, so residue from the previous fragrance does not mix with the new one.
Regular care helps you:
- Keep the nozzle clean.
- Reduce the buildup of fragrance residue.
- Keep the new scent clear when changing fragrances.
- Keep the device clean during everyday use.
- Avoid materials or methods that are unsuitable for the device.
Know your diffuser type before cleaning
Before cleaning your diffuser, check which technology it uses.
Some diffusers have a water tank, while others work entirely without water.
Celestial's Vessel 01, for example, uses cold-air diffusion to disperse fragrance without water or heat.
You can learn more about the device and how to operate it on the Vessel 01 page. Vessel 01 diffuser
It should therefore be cleaned according to its own instructions, which differ from those for water-based diffusers.
Steps for cleaning Vessel 01
Follow the device's care instructions using these steps:
1. Turn off the device
Before cleaning the device or removing any part, make sure it is switched off.
This makes it easier to handle the diffuser when removing the bottle or cleaning the nozzle.
2. Remove the existing fragrance
Remove the fragrance from the glass bottle, and avoid mixing remnants of different fragrances inside it.
When reinstalling the fragrance bottle, secure it as described in the operating instructions.

3. Keep the diffuser body clean and dry
Keep the device dry and prevent water from entering its internal parts.
Gently remove dust or marks from the exterior, taking care to keep liquids away from charging ports and electronic components.
4. Clean the device with alcohol
Clean Vessel 01 with alcohol once every 3 months, or if the scent becomes weaker or the device produces less mist than usual.
After removing the fragrance from the glass bottle, add approximately 5 ml of alcohol to the bottle and reinstall it in the device.
Run the device two to five times to pass the alcohol through the fragrance pathway. Then switch it off and remove any remaining alcohol from the glass bottle.
Note: Only run the device with alcohol for the specified cleaning cycles. Running it with alcohol or alcohol-containing fragrances for extended periods may affect the pump and its performance.
5. Let the parts dry completely
Do not skip this step.
After removing the alcohol, wait approximately 3 minutes and check that the bottle and cleaned parts are completely dry. If any moisture remains, wait until it has dried fully before adding fragrance.
Do not restart the device with fragrance while the cleaned parts are still damp.
6. Reinstall a compatible fragrance
Once all the parts are completely dry, reinstall the fragrance, switch on the device, and choose a suitable intensity setting.
Use fragrances designed specifically for cold-air diffusion devices.

When should you clean an electric diffuser?
For Vessel 01, follow the alcohol cleaning steps once every 3 months, or if the scent becomes weaker or the device produces less mist than usual.
Also check the cleanliness of the glass bottle when changing fragrances, especially if there is visible residue from the previous scent.
You do not need to clean the device with alcohol every time you use it. Care for it regularly and make sure the parts are dry after cleaning and before adding fragrance.
How do you clean a diffuser when changing fragrances?
If you are switching from a warm scent to a fresh or floral fragrance, avoid pouring the new fragrance directly over residue from the previous one.
You can:
- Switch off the device.
- Remove the previous fragrance from the glass bottle.
- Check that there is no visible residue in the bottle.
- Follow the alcohol cleaning steps above when needed.
- Make sure the alcohol has been removed and the parts are completely dry before adding fragrance.
- Install the new fragrance.
- Start with an intensity setting that suits the space.
These steps help you experience the new scent without mixing it with residue from the previous fragrance.
Mistakes to avoid when cleaning a diffuser
A common mistake is using another diffuser's cleaning method without checking how your device works.
For Vessel 01, avoid:
- Adding water to the device, because its cold-air technology works without water.
- Restarting the device with fragrance after cleaning before checking that the bottle and cleaned parts are completely dry.
- Using ordinary essential oils that are not designed for this type of device.
- Running the device with alcohol or alcohol-containing fragrances for extended periods, which may affect the pump and its performance.
- Mixing fragrances without removing the previous scent's residue.
- Using a cleaning method that is not included in the device's instructions.
Distinguish between running the device with alcohol for a limited number of cleaning cycles and using it for extended periods. Cleaning involves adding approximately 5 ml of alcohol to the glass bottle, running the device two to five times, removing the alcohol, and letting the parts dry completely before adding fragrance. Prolonged use with alcohol or alcohol-containing fragrances may affect the pump and its performance.
Can you wash an electric diffuser with water?
It depends on the diffuser type.
Diffusers with water tanks have different cleaning instructions. Vessel 01 does not use water to operate; it uses cold-air diffusion.
Do not add water to the device for cleaning or operation.
Does the fragrance type affect diffuser care?
Using a fragrance that is compatible with the device helps you care for it.
Not every oil or fragrance is suitable for every diffuser. Celestial recommends using fragrances designed for cold-air diffusion with Vessel 01.
Choosing a compatible fragrance also removes the need to experiment with liquids or blends that are not designed for the device.
